ˇ What is “Reading Europe”/ an Information Resource Centre on Books and Reading in Europe.
Research analysis and statistics form an indispensable instrument on which any modern idea for cultural policymaking is based. Statistics produce the actual data on which anyone should be based (cultural actors, study makers, researchers, reading promoters, politicians, professionals) in order to investigate the real needs and come to conclusions in respect to the promotion of books, literature and readership development.
“Reading Europe” is an ambitious initiative of the National Book Centre of Greece, together with the major European Statistics and Book Organisations, Professional Associations and FEP (Federation of European Publishers), aiming to cover the lack of comparable data at European level and the lack of a permanent mechanism for collecting, monitoring and publicising statistical information. In the context of this project we are currently monitoring statistical information in the fields of Book Market Statistics and Reading Behaviour Statistics.
ˇ Better information for better decision making
In this web site you’ll have the opportunity to browse the statistical information that we’ve gathered so far. The data inventory includes reading behaviour statistics contributed by organisations from Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, U.K. as well as book market data collected from Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Spain. But don’t forget to visit our site frequently as it’s our intention to keep enriching and updating the databank on a regular basis for all fields of interest. So we suggest adding this site in your bookmarks!
Also presented in the site is a “Good Practice Manual” on how to successfully conduct a survey on reading behaviour, that has been implemented as a major outcome of this project. Three distinguished researchers, experts in the field of reading behaviour surveys, M. Guy Frank (Ministry of Culture of Luxembourg), M. Īlivier Donnat (Ministry of Culture of France) and M. Eduardo de Freitas (ISCTE - Sociology Department) have been involved in the writing of this study.
We would highly appreciate any remarks and suggestions so don’t hesitate to e-mail us your comments and recommendations on how to improve the functionality and usefulness of the site. In the meanwhile we hope you’ll find this site helpful and interesting. |
